Creating 3D Flexible Sensor Array using Standard Laser and 3D Printers
This project aims at enhancing the creativity of researchers in the field of ubiquitous computing and human computing interaction, by finding methods to merge object creating and sensor creating together. The work will be based on pioneer works (flexible PCB printed on paper using standard Laser printer, flexible or conductive 3D objects using standard 3D printer) and push the boundary of the state of the art by
  • sensor array manufacturing in 3D space
  • creating flexible sensor array cheaply under standard(CS/EE) lab environment
Workflow
  • Month 1: get familiar and selection of proper printers and material
  • Month 2: create 2D sensor array and sensor-electronics interface
  • Month 3: create 3D structures with different types of material
  • Month 4: integration and evaluation of 1 type of 3D structure and 2D sensor-electronics interface
  • Month 5: create another 2 types of novel 3D sensor arrays
  • Month 6: documentation, paper and thesis writing
Advantages
  • The Wearable Computing Lab (WCL) has a long history of creating sensor arrays and is in possession of a series of sensing platforms (large scale resistive array, high precision capacitive array, acoustic array and etc.), which can be used directly as evaluation platforms for the 3D sensing object created in this project.
  • The methods developed in this project will enable the creation of many new sensors, which can be used in Ubiquitous Computing, HCI, Robotics, Pervasive Healthcare and etc. A scientific paper is thus expected based on this thesis and shall be highly cited afterwards. The 3D sensors created are expected to be used in further experiments in WCL, further enhancing the citation rate of this paper

Context-Aware Ubiquitous Wireless Charging Array
This project aims at creating a context-aware transmission array for safe and efficient energy transmission through coupling of AC Magnetic Field. This work will open the possibility of charging mobile devices at the same time of their normal operating. (For example, to charge a mouse from the mouse pad even when the user is actively moving the mouse).
Workflow
  • Month 1: get familiar wireless charging, system design
  • Month 2: selection of proper components, building prototype boards
  • Month 3: context-aware algorithms development
  • Month 4: evaluate and improve transmission efficiency under one scenario (e.g. a mouse on its mouse pad)
  • Month 5: implementation of the same design into another scenario (e.g. a shoe on the floor)
  • Month 6: documentation, paper and thesis writing
Advantages
  • You’ll have an easy start: This work will be based on earlier work of the Wearable Computing Lab (WCL), where single coil to single coil wireless charging for mobile devices has been created and evaluated. The student can have an easy start by reading the comprehensive documents created by former students.

Gait Analyze with Large-Scale Textile Pressure Sensor Array
This project aims at unobtrusively analyzing normal gait and gait disorders using largescale textile pressure sensor array, that has been the kernel outcome of EU project SimpleSkin (http://www.simpleskin.org/?videos).
Workflow
  • Month 1: get familiar with gait analyze, the pressure sensor array and corresponding data recording/processing framework
  • Month 2: ethics control, data recording (with normal people)
  • Month 3: data mining algorithms development
  • Month 4: build live demonstrator
  • Month 5: second round data recording (with patients) and data mining
  • Month 6: documentation, paper and thesis writing
Advantages

Horse Activity Recognition with Large-Scale Textile Pressure Sensor Array
This project aims at unobtrusively analyzing sport horse’s activities under real-life condition to enhance their health condition and performance. Large-scale textile pressure sensor array, that has been the kernel outcome of EU project SimpleSkin (http://www.simpleskin.org/?videos) and also other sensors will be used.

  • Month 2: ethics control, building textile sensor into horse saddle

Crowd Counting with Limited Smart Phones and Head Mounted Displays
This project aims at evaluating the performance of different sensing modalities embedded in Smart phones and Head Mounted Displays(HMD) in crowd counting, when the number of phones and HMDs are limited. The result will be an optimization guideline considering on the one hand the availability of sensing systems and on the other hand the changing crowd density.

Indoor Group Activity Recognition with Highly Synchronized Microphone Arrays
This project aims at detecting and analyzing cooperative human activities and relationships within a group of people under indoor environment. For accurate in-door localization and activity recognition, highly synchronized microphone arrays will be used.

  • Month 1: get familiar with microphone array platform and corresponding record program
  • Month 2: develop robust in-door localization algorithms
  • Month 3: develop activity recognition algorithms
